Nissan has revealed the new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) at the Shanghai Auto Show - its first-ever electrified ute, developed in collaboration with Dongfeng and built in China.
While the name may sound familiar, this new pickup truck is entirely unrelated to both the American-spec Frontier and the next-generation Navara.
Designed for global markets
Jointly developed by Zhengzhou Nissan (ZNA), the Frontier Pro shares underpinnings with the Dongfeng Z9 but adds several distinct Nissan design cues.
The electric ute features a bold front fascia with three slim LED bars above the illuminated Nissan badge - an intentional nod to the 1980s Hardbody D21.
Chunkier side protection and unique 18-inch alloys reinforce its rugged stance, while redesigned taillamps and tailgate LEDs complete the rear.
Although precise dimensions are unconfirmed, the donor Z9 stretches to 5520mm, placing the Frontier Pro between mid-size and full-size segments.
Nissan hasn’t confirmed if this version will reach New Zealand, but it’s aiming for global reach, likely targeting markets where electrified utes are on the rise.
High-output PHEV with AWD
Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a potent electric motor, delivering a total system output exceeding 300kW and 800Nm. This puts it squarely in the firing line of competitors like the BYD Shark 6 ute in China.
The hybrid drivetrain supports four drive modes: Hybrid, EV, Performance and Snow - and delivers a claimed 135km EV-only range on the CLTC cycle. The Frontier Pro also integrates an electromechanical rear differential lock and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, outputting up to 6kW for powering tools or appliances.
Interior and tech
Inside, the cabin mirrors the Dongfeng Z9’s layout with a 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 10-inch digital cluster. A two-spoke steering wheel and optional comfort features, including heated, ventilated and massaging front seats add to the appeal. A retractable electronic tonneau cover also enhances usability for tradies or adventurers.
Looking ahead
Nissan confirmed production will start in China by late 2025. The brand remains tight-lipped on regional availability, but the Frontier Pro is part of a broader electrification strategy. It's one of nine new NEVs to be released in China by 2027, including the just-unveiled N7 electric sedan.
As Nissan hedges its bets across different markets, the Frontier Pro may offer a glimpse into how the brand envisions electrified utes in the years to come. And if everything goes right, the new PHEV ute just might have a chance to rival the formidable BYD Shark 6.
