  • GWM has announced that the Ora 5 all-electric SUV is heading to New Zealand.
  • The Ora 5 is longer, taller and wider than the small Ora hatch already on sale here.
  • It is also competitively priced, starting at just $36,990 for the entry Lux model.

GWM New Zealand has announced the local arrival of the Ora 5 SUV, a battery electric vehicle set to reach Kiwi showrooms in June 2026.

The new Ora 5 enters the competitive small SUV category and starts at a sharp $36,990 for the entry-level Lux grade. A higher-specification Ultra grade is also available, priced from $39,990. This launch marks the beginning of an expanded Ora electric line up in New Zealand, with further models expected through 2027.

The Ora 5 is larger in every dimension than the smaller Ora hatch, but is still relatively diminutive in SUV terms.

The Ora 5 SUV is larger than the existing Ora hatchback, measuring 4471mm in length, 1833mm in width, and 1641mm in height. The wheelbase has grown to 2720mm, which is an increase of 70mm over the hatch, and the SUV version also gets 175mm of ground clearance.

The Ora 5 is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW and 260Nm of torque. It packs a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by SVOLT, which is GWM’s dedicated battery development division.

The Ora 5's interior is minimalist, with a subtle retro twist that we rather like.

GWM says the battery offers a range of up to 430 kilometres with a rated power consumption of 15.5kWh/100km - although this is based on the extremely generous WLTC testing cycle - and the vehicle's "15-in-1 intelligent electric drive architecture" integrates hardware and software to achieve an energy conversion efficiency of up to 95 percent.

Charging capabilities include support for DC fast charging at up to 120kW, which enables a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in approximately 20 minutes, while the Ora 5 also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to discharge up to 6kW of power to external devices.

The entry level Lux model starts at a very competitive price of $36,990 comes standard with 18-inch machined alloy wheels, roof rails, automatic LED headlights featuring daytime running lights and electric levelling, rain-sensing wipers, LED taillights, rear privacy glass, and smart keyless entry.

The Ora 5 comes with a long list of standard equipment and a very competitive price.

On the inside, the Lux gets leatherette seating with a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, while the front passenger seat is 4-way manually adjustable. A leatherette steering wheel and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster are also standard, as is single zone climate control.

The infotainment system is centred around a 14.6-inch touchscreen running GWM's Coffee OS, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a 6-speaker audio system.

The Lux also gets a robust safety package featuring seven airbags, including a front-centre airbag, and a 360-degree monitoring camera with a transparent view. Standard driver assistance technologies consist of adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with junction assist and pedestrian/cyclist detection, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, and a driver fatigue monitoring system.

Meanwhile, the up-spec Ultra that kicks off at $39,990 adds an electric tailgate, a panoramic glass sunroof, heated power folding side mirrors, dual zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, power adjustment for the passenger seat, a wireless phone charger, 64 colour ambient interior lighting and an upgraded 9 speaker audio system.
