A car collector could be about to make $NZ1.4m profit as the McLaren P1 supercar he bought new just nine months ago is up for auction for around $NZ3.4million

The McLaren, which is the fastest car ever built in Britain, can rocket from zero to 60mph in under three seconds and boasts a top speed of 217mph.

 

Don Wallace, who founded Lazydays RV SuperCenter in Tampa, Florida, bought the car earlier this year for around $NZ2m, and has already decided to cash in.

His car has only been driven 248 miles and is sprayed in Volcano Red, a paint job which cost the American collector a further NZ$1600.

Experts at RM Sotheby's Monterey sale in California have given the P1 an estimate of just short of NZ$3.4million - potentially netting Mr Wallace a NZ$1.4 profit in less than nine months.

The potential 60 per cent increase for a brand-new car is a staggering figure, with most new models depreciating the moment they leave the showroom. It is thought to be the most a McLaren P1 has ever sold for.

Mr Wallace, who owns two McLaren P1s, said: 'For all of the cars I have raced over the years and the supercars that I have had the pleasure of owning, this P1 is by far the fastest street-legal machine I have ever driven.

'It is terrifyingly quick and performance is absolutely incredible.'

McLaren only built 375 of the limited edition supercars and as a result, used prices have soared as wealthy petrolheads who missed out on a new one desperately try to get their hands on a P1.

This accelerates the P1 from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and 0-124mph in 6.8 seconds with the car topping out at 217mph. 

It is also capable of 34mpg courtesy of the hybrid technology.

RM Sotheby's said: 'The McLaren P1 is poised to become a future classic, rarer than both its primary rivals, the LaFerrari and Porsche 918, and it will remain as a high point in McLaren's storied history.

'It is a vehicle that combines the very best technology, developed and pioneered by McLaren in Formula One, in an effort to create the most exciting, dynamic, and technologically advanced car on the planet.' 

A second-hand model was put up for auction at DK Engineering in Hertfordshire for £1.25million in January - enough to buy 38 new Ford Fiestas. 

 Car-mad comedy actor Rowan Atkinson was reported to be after one of the cars when it was released having secured a £910,000 insurance pay-out to restore his McLaren F1 after he crashed it.
