MG’s CyberX concept previews a rugged small electric SUV.

MG’s CyberX concept previews a rugged small electric SUV.

MG has revealed the CyberX concept at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show - a compact electric SUV with a distinctly rugged attitude. Boxy proportions, upright glass and retro pop-up headlights distinguish it from MG’s existing EV range, with unmistakable visual cues nodding to off-road icons like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

The CyberX is part of MG’s growing “Cyber” family, sitting alongside the Cyberster roadster. While it arrives as a concept, MG says development of a production model is already underway.

The vehicle measures 4.3m long, placing it in the upper end of the small SUV segment. But unlike the urban-focused ZS EV or ES5, the CyberX leans heavily into a more adventurous aesthetic.

Designed by an industry heavyweight

The man behind the look is Jozef Kaban, a veteran of Bugatti, BMW and Skoda. Kaban's design credits include the Bugatti Veyron and Volkswagen Lupo.

Speaking to Autocar, Kaban described the CyberX as “a completely different approach” to the Cyberster, noting its playful design cues and Testarossa-inspired pop-up headlights. The high ground clearance, chunky tyres and squared-off arches all signal a shift towards lifestyle-focused EVs.

Built on a new EV platform

The CyberX will likely debut SAIC Motor’s E3 electric platform when it enters production. This purpose-built EV architecture supports "cell-to-body" integration, allowing the battery pack to form part of the structural frame. That could mean gains in rigidity and a lower overall vehicle weight - important advantages in the electric SUV space.

Although MG hasn’t shown the interior, the company has confirmed that in-car connectivity will be developed in collaboration with tech giant Oppo. With tinted windows and no cabin reveal at the show, the Shanghai display vehicle appears to be more of a static prototype.

Where it fits and what’s next

The CyberX is expected to be sold in China first, with potential rollout to Europe and beyond.

While exact specs and launch dates remain unconfirmed, reports suggest production could begin within the next couple of years.

Positioned as an EV with off-road spirit in a compact footprint, the CyberX could carve out a niche alongside MG’s more mainstream SUVs - provided the production version stays true to the concept’s standout design.
