Peugeot 5008 goes hybrid-only in NZ.

Peugeot 5008 goes hybrid-only in NZ.

Peugeot has launched the 5008 in New Zealand, confirming it will be available exclusively as a hybrid seven-seat SUV.

With a sharp focus on practical family mobility, the updated 5008 blends compact efficiency with a premium interior and an all-new hybrid powertrain.

Now offered solely in GT specification, the 5008 Hybrid is priced at $67,990. The powertrain is based on a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system and 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Total system output is rated at 110kW and 230Nm, powering the front wheels. Peugeot quotes a combined fuel use of 5.4L/100km (WLTP), with emissions at 129g/km.

Efficiency without compromise

Despite the 5008’s size - stretching to 4791mm in length - the hybrid system promises solid efficiency without the complexity or cost of plug-in charging.

Instead, the battery self-charges via braking and engine recovery. Peugeot claims the system can allow low-speed, short-distance driving purely on electric power. The French carmaker says this system is up to 15% more fuel efficient than the pure petrol versions.

“With the 5008, we’re offering Kiwi drivers a large, premium SUV with the latest safety and infotainment tech, minus the fuel bill shock,” says Auto Distributors NZ General Manager, Reuben Collier. “This is a class-above family SUV – all the space, none of the compromise.”

Tech-packed interior

Inside, Peugeot’s new 5008 gets the full i-Cockpit digital treatment, with a massive 21-inch panoramic display, i-Toggle customisation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Boot space ranges from 348L with all seven seats in use to a massive 2232L with rows two and three folded flat. A hands-free electric tailgate is standard.

Interior materials are upmarket, with Uziris fabric and Iced Clay stitching as standard. Nappa leather and massage seats are optional ($5990). Ambient lighting, tri-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and Peugeot’s signature compact steering wheel round out a high-spec offering.

Peugeot's new 5008 Hybrid GT features a comprehensive suite of active safety tech, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, lane keep and lane change assist, night-function autonomous emergency braking and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 5008 also meets Euro 7 emissions standards and comes with a 5-year/100,000km warranty and roadside assistance.

Peugeot’s electrified push

The move to a hybrid-only 5008 in New Zealand signals Peugeot’s commitment to transitioning its local range toward full electrification.

The 5008 sits above the 3008 Hybrid, offering more space and seating flexibility, but in a similarly tech-forward package.

For now, there’s just one trim and one powertrain, but its focus is clear: premium practicality in a hybrid format that suits everyday Kiwi driving.
