It's going to be a big Mustang month this one. Driven's road test of the Ford Mustang GT RTR is in tomorrow's edition [shameless plug], and that's just the beginning...
For now, let's talk about the new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
Back in January, the blue oval teased the GT500 with the above video clip; simultaneously confirming that it would be the most powerful Ford production car ever — over 700hp (522kW) proudly exclaimed as the mysterious silhouette roars off into the distance.
That's a fair bit more than the previous GT500, which had 'a mere' 662hp.
This is part of an ever increasing tug-of-war with Chevrolet and Dodge, who themselves have built horsepower kings in the Camaro ZL1 and Challenger Hellcat and Demon. The likes of Hennessey have also waded into the fight, via their darkly named Exorcist Camaro.
Well, along with having a rough guide of how powerful the next GT500 will be, we also now know a bit more about what it'll look like.
And what we know is that it's angry.
The upcoming 2018 Mustang was already a pretty miffed looking machine, thanks to more squinted headlights and a bigger, inverted mouth. But this is something else.
The primary grill takes a few hints from the Audi department; extending down the full face of the car to give the Shelby Cobra snake maximum impact front and center. An aggressive front splitter and intake set-up add further zest, but beyond that it's hard to see what else is on the menu.
Interestingly, headlights from the current S-550 Mustang appear to make a comeback, too.
Nonetheless, Ford's drip-feed of GT500 tidbits has us salivating. We don't yet know what will propel the GT500, but speculation is that it'll be based on the current 5.2-litre V8 in the existing GT350. And, like the 350, it'll also don a supercharger.
But, we'll keep you posted.
