  • Multiple V8 options in development, including GF supercar.
  • New models aimed at premium markets outside China.

GWM says its move to V8 power for the Tank 700 and its yet-to-be-revealed GF supercar is all about export - and not at all about its home market.

Tank 700 will have a 'normal' V8 says GWM, but multiple versions are in development.

Speaking to a group of New Zealand and Australian media at the Bejing Auto Show this week, GWM chairman Jack Wei confirmed that future versions of the Tank 700 will feature a V8 powertrain: “In the future, the Tank 700 will... use a V8 engine. The supercar uses a high-performance V8, while the Tank 700 uses a normal V8.

“This is completely opposite to the current environment or trend in China; it does not fit the Chinese market. We developed this V8 to meet the needs of more global users, in markets such as Australia and New Zealand.”

The confirmation builds on discussions first raised at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, where the prospect of a V8 application in an SUV was raised. At the time, senior GWM management acknowledged both the level of demand and the growing appetite for a V8-powered premium SUV within the Tank brand outside China.

At Beijing, GWM confirmed its GF supercar will feature a 4.0-litre twin-turbo hybrid V8, signalling that multiple V8 powertrains are in development across different vehicle applications.

The 700 (launched in 2024 with V6 petrol PHEV and diesel power) is the flagship SUV of the Tank lineup. No timing or market-specific rollout plans for the V8 version have yet been announced.
