A new wave of Kiwis is getting behind the wheel of electric vehicles (EVs) as understanding about the ease of ownership grows.
Global market analyst BMI is forecasting 220% year-on-year growth in New Zealand sales of passenger EVs – from about 11,726 units last year to more than 37,445 in 2026. That means approximately one in three new cars sold this year will be electric.
It comes as the EV market grows and evolves, with a new generation of accessible, design-led vehicles coming online to suit Kiwis’ broadening needs
Simon Rutherford, CEO of Auto Distributors New Zealand, says growing interest in EVs reflects a desire of Kiwis to buy into the future rather than the past. He believes EV uptake has now moved past the early adopter phase, with New Zealand now at the beginning of the mass adoption phase.
“There's a recognition that, rather than it being a complicated thing in your life to own an EV, it actually simplifies your life,” he says.
Firsthand experience has been bolstered by a growing awareness of the range of EVs on offer and practical experience of their product quality, he says.
This has helped address misconceptions around range anxiety, battery longevity, charging access and whether EVs are practical for daily New Zealand driving.
Alongside access to new levels of value in the market, fuel price volatility and regular environmental impacts offer further encouragements.
“There’s no limit to the cost of living and wanting to insure against shocks,” Rutherford observes. “So, how do you manage that? An electric vehicle can be a step that puts you in control.”
However, while fuel prices may have accelerated EV uptake in the short term, Rutherford suggests the underlying trend was there anyway.
“I think people are just now looking at it as the logical choice,” he says, adding that this is particularly true of those wanting to buy smaller city cars.
A new generation of EV vehicles in this class, such as the Arcfox T1, offer additional economic benefits. A new entrant in the New Zealand market, the Arcfox is futuristic, Rutherford says, and delivers a sense of escapism, a designer feel, and simplicity.
“We’re seeing a lot of entries coming into those smaller vehicle segments because it’s a very clear and obvious use case without any trade-offs,” Rutherford says.
While smaller cars and SUVs allow buyers to get into the technology cheaply, they also deliver the best solution of all the powertrains, he explains. And there’s an excitement factor, too.
“I think that sometimes the ‘fun to drive’ aspect gets lost in powertrain discussions,” Rutherford says. “And EVs, we know they’re quick, they're quiet. We know that you can drive a long distance in one without feeling shattered at the end of it.”
The new EV generation’s aesthetics are a step up from what we might expect affordable vehicles to look like, too. As Rutherford observes, people “buy from the outside”, getting excited about how a vehicle looks before exploring its capabilities.

“It’s a huge amount of car for the price,” Rutherford says. “It's a premium product that's delivering outstanding value from the get-go.”
As New Zealanders who book a test drive of the Arcfox T1 will discover, it’s a fun EV to get behind the wheel of. Quick off the mark, with good handling, the car also features technology like voice-activated commands that are both very effective and uncomplicated.
In Rutherford’s experience, those taking a test drive will quickly conclude this is a vehicle that looks great on the outside, but delivers more on the inside.
“Simple and effective to use, people will think ‘this is somewhere I want to be’” he says.
“I'd be proud to turn up anywhere in it because it looks great, and it's going to give me a really enjoyable experience every time I drive it.”
