Bentley is promising a performance milestone for its forthcoming electric Torcal: more power than any production car in the company's history, along with its quickest acceleration from standstill.
There is a qualification to that ambition, however. Bentley says the way the Torcal builds speed is being engineered around passenger comfort, with the aim of making that performance feel controlled and refined.
The latest development update puts the emphasis on how the electric car will deliver its pace. Exact power and torque outputs, along with an acceleration time, remain undisclosed.
Instant response, carefully delivered
Electric propulsion gives Bentley a different way to pursue a familiar objective: substantial performance available as soon as the driver asks for it.

The company says the Torcal will respond immediately to the accelerator and deliver a continuous surge of acceleration. That responsiveness is intended to apply both when pulling away from rest and when overtaking at speed.
Bentley also says it has designed the performance delivery to remain within comfort limits. It describes a balance between rapid response and the composure its customers expect, making the character of the acceleration central to the engineering brief.
A new chapter in Bentley torque
Bentley links that approach to a long line of earlier powertrains, citing the Blower and Speed Six, the 6.75-litre V8 and the twin-turbocharged W12.

Across those different engines, it identifies readily available torque as a defining feature: the ability to summon strong performance without making the car feel strained.
The Torcal is intended to carry that characteristic into electric propulsion. Bentley's latest claims set an ambitious benchmark within its own range, although the figures needed to quantify the promised step forward are still to come.
