Millionth M marks factory milestone

Millionth M marks factory milestone

  • BMW has confirmed its first fully electric M3 will be manufactured exclusively at its Munich plant.
  • M3 finished in Fire Orange III marks the one-millionth vehicle produced by BMW M.
  • Munich will build only electric vehicles from 2027, following a €650 million investment in the factory.

The BMW M3’s electric future now has a confirmed production address. BMW says the first fully electric M3 will be built exclusively at its Munich plant, using BMW M’s Neue Klasse technology.

The announcement accompanied a very different M3: a current-generation car finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III, marking the one-millionth vehicle produced by BMW M.

It is a milestone for the broader M operation, rather than the millionth M3. Munich plant head Peter Weber presented the orange car to BMW M chief executive Franciscus van Meel, linking the factory’s present output with its next performance model.

The next M3 takes shape

The electric M3 will become Munich’s second Neue Klasse model, following the i3. That gives the performance car a place in the factory’s wider transition, although BMW has not disclosed its launch date, power output, driving range or price in this announcement.

For now, the commitment concerns where the car will be made and the technology underpinning it. The current generation of M3 entered production at Munich in 2020, while the original M3 reached the market four decades ago.

BMW M itself has more than five decades of history behind the million-car total.

A factory changing around production

Munich is scheduled to build only electric vehicles from 2027. BMW is investing €650 million in the plant, adding a new body shop, assembly facilities and logistics areas across approximately a third of the site while production continued.

That timetable applies to Munich’s manufacturing operations; it does not establish an end date for petrol-powered BMWs or M cars across the company’s global production network.

The orange milestone M3 therefore captures a moment between generations. The electric M3’s specifications remain under wraps, but BMW has now confirmed that Munich will be the sole manufacturing home for the electric M3.
