Mercedes-AMG has added a new entry point to its electric GT family, with the GT 53 4-Door Coupe trading the headline-grabbing output of the 860kW GT 63 for a potentially more road-trip-friendly combination of performance, range and rapid charging.
Performance without top billing
The GT 53's two electric drive units, one at each axle, produce a combined 400kW and 800Nm.
That is enough for a claimed 0–100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds when measured with a one-foot rollout, or 3.9 seconds without it.
Top speed is limited to 230km/h in standard form, with a 250km/h maximum available as an option.
Those figures place the GT 53 firmly in high-performance territory, even if its role is to sit below the far more powerful GT 63.
Range and charging take priority
Its 106 kWh usable battery operates on an 800-volt electrical architecture. Mercedes-AMG quotes a preliminary WLTP range of 809–682km, putting outright distance at the centre of this version's appeal.
The company also claims DC charging at up to 600kW when the car is connected to a suitable charger. Under those conditions, up to 534km of range can be added in 10 minutes, while a 10–80% charge is quoted at 11 minutes.
Those peak figures will depend on access to compatible infrastructure, but they give the GT 53 a different emphasis from the range-topping model: less about chasing the largest power number, and more about combining serious speed with shorter charging stops and longer potential journeys.
German launch comes first
Orders in Germany open on 13 August 2026, with pricing starting from €115,430.
Mercedes has not disclosed New Zealand availability or pricing, so local buyers will have to wait for confirmation of whether the new entry model will reach this market.
