Polestar 3 gains faster 350kW charging capability.

Polestar 3 gains faster 350kW charging capability.

  • Polestar 3 now uses 800V architecture enabling DC charging up to 350kW.
  • Battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 22 minutes.
  • Breathe Charge software optimises charging speed across varying conditions.

Polestar has given its flagship SUV a serious electrical overhaul, with a shift to 800V architecture unlocking faster charging and improved efficiency across the board.

The updated Polestar 3 now supports DC fast-charging at up to 350kW, cutting the 10 to 80% top-up time to as little as 22 minutes, firmly placing it among the quicker-charging EVs in its class.

Big voltage, bigger gains

The move to 800V represents a full system rethink, with new batteries, motors, inverters and even revised cabling layouts all part of the upgrade.

Higher voltage means lower energy losses and less heat build-up, allowing the system to run more efficiently while avoiding bulky components. The upside is obvious: shorter charging stops and better long-distance usability.

Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller says the change brings “true added value and usability… thanks to faster charging that is among the best in its segment.”

Smart software does the heavy lifting

Hardware is only half the story. Alongside the electrical upgrade sits new adaptive battery management tech called Breathe Charge, developed to squeeze more performance from the pack in real-world conditions.

The system continuously monitors battery state in real time, adjusting charging speed on the fly to suit temperature, chemistry and overall condition. The goal is to maximise charge speed without compromising long-term battery health.

In practice, that means not just faster peak charging, but more consistent results, especially in less-than-ideal weather.

Faster stops, more range

Polestar claims the benefits are tangible. At compatible 350kW chargers, the SUV can add significantly more range in short bursts, with a 10-minute session delivering up to 38% more range than without the software.

Cold-weather performance is also a focus. According to Breathe Battery Technologies CEO Dr Yan Zhao, the system allows drivers to achieve similar range gains in low temperatures as they would in optimal conditions without the software.

The direction is clear. Faster charging is becoming just as important as outright range, and Polestar’s latest update shows how much of that battle is now being fought in software as much as hardware.

There's no word yet on broader market rollout for this upgraded Polestar 3.
