360kW and 3.5 tonnes of towing: JAC NZ reveals numbers for its T9 PHEV ute

  • JAC New Zealand has revealed a few numbers for its T9 PHEV ute before its local debut.

JAC New Zealand has firmed up some of the specifications we can expect to see from its upcoming T9 PHEV ute ahead of its official debut at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek, Hamilton, this month.

Where previous numbers around the T9 PHEV have been largely speculative, JAC NZ says that the plug-in hybrid ute has undergone local testing across various New Zealand terrains, including tarmac and back roads, while performing towing and hauling tasks, which the company says is to "ensure the model is calibrated for local conditions."

JAC New Zealand will be opening the order books for the plug-in hybrid T9 at the National Fieldays held at Hamilton's Mystery Creek next week.

Preliminary specifications released by JAC following this local testing show the T9 PHEV will offer a full 3.5-tonne towing capacity and a 915kg payload, while its powertrain will deliver 360kW of power and achieves a combined range of 1005km under the NEDC testing cycle, which is considerably more generous than the WLTP cycle that is more commonly used these days, but a combined real world range of close to 900km will still be impressive.

The final torque figure is yet to be confirmed, but JAC is hopeful of seeing something approaching 1000Nm from the T9 PHEV's 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and 32kWh battery. The battery is said to be good for up to 100km range under the NEDC cycle, so expect to see around 80 to 90 in real world terms.

The T9 PHEV has been undergoing local testing before final New Zealand specs are locked in place for production.

The PHEV is built on the same platform as the company's existing diesel T9 model and uses dual electric motors and a four-speed DHT transmission featuring low gear ratios designed to provide torque at low speeds, while it also includes an intelligent three-way differential locking system. In terms of safety, the T9 PHEV has been awarded a 5 Star ANCAP rating.

Andrew Craw, General Manager of JAC New Zealand, said that the local team is using data from the current testing phase to finalise factory calibrations before the vehicles for the local market enter full production.

The plug-in hybrid sits on the same underpinnings as the diesel-powered T9, but packs a 2.0-litre petrol engine and dual electric motors.

“There isn’t long to wait now and we can't wait to share some of our local testing and show what the T9 PHEV is made of at Fieldays, with pre-sales opening from 10 June," said Craw.

JAC is serving as the official vehicle sponsor for Fieldays, where it will reveal full pricing and detailed specifications on the first day of the event; Wednesday, June 10. Pre-sales for the T9 PHEV are scheduled to open on the same day, and the company is currently preparing to accept registrations of interest through its website.
